Secrets of the ancient dead : deciphering the past from tombs, graves and mummies / Tony Allan.
London : Duncan Baird, 2004.
[MCL call number: 930.1 A418s 2004; eight copies, no holds]

Are you interested in rituals and practices that relate to death?  Oh, right, who isn’t interested in that, however reluctantly?  Well, if you want a lot of beautiful glossy photographs of tombs, burial sites, grave artifacts, skulls & bones, and preserved bodies, this is the book for you.  It’s a little light on the intellectual discussion and a little heavy on the defense of the orthodoxy of the archaeological profession, but yes the photographs are lovely and informative.

Secrets of the Ancient Dead is divided by continent, more or less, but some geographical areas are quite underrepresented (North America, for example).  There is a bibliography and an index.
